Almost everyone who calls us about Ooty asks the same question within the first minute: is two days enough, or should we make it three?
It is a fair question and most travel pages dodge it, because the honest answer costs them a booking either way. Here is how we answer it on the phone.
## The short version
Two days works if you are leaving Friday night and you mainly want to see Ooty town — the Botanical Gardens, the lake, Doddabetta. Three days is the better trip, and it is better value per day, if you want Coonoor and the tea country as well.
The arithmetic is worth seeing, because it surprises people.

The third day costs ₹2,000 more and drops your cost per person per day by about a quarter. That is because the expensive parts of an Ooty trip — the vehicle, the driver, the 270 km each way — are already paid for on day one. The extra day only adds a room and some fuel.
Most people who ring us asking about the two-day book the three-day once they see that.
## What two days actually looks like
You leave Bangalore late on Friday or very early on Saturday. It is roughly 270 km and six to seven hours with a breakfast stop, usually through Mysore and Bandipur.
You reach Ooty around midday Saturday. That afternoon is realistically enough for the Botanical Gardens and Ooty Lake, maybe the Rose Garden if you move quickly. Sunday morning you do Doddabetta — at 2,637 metres it is the highest point in the Nilgiris and has a telescope house looking over the whole range — and then you start back, because it is a long drive home.
That is a real trip. It is not a rushed one if Ooty town is what you came for.
What it is not is enough time for Coonoor.
## What the third day buys
Coonoor is 20 km below Ooty and it is where the tea country actually is. Sim's Park, Lamb's Rock, Dolphin's Nose looking down into the valley. Pykara Lake and Falls sit the other side of town, about 20 km out, and boating there in the morning before the buses arrive is one of the better hours you will spend in the Nilgiris.
There is also the Nilgiri Mountain Railway — the UNESCO-listed toy train that grinds up through tunnels and tea from Mettupalayam. Riding a section of it takes half a day, and on a two-day trip you simply do not have that half day.
So the third day is not a longer version of the same trip. It is a different trip.
## When two days is genuinely the right call
We tell people to take the two-day when:
- **You only have a weekend.** A Friday-night departure and a Sunday-evening return does not need leave.
- **You are travelling with very young children.** Two long drives inside three days is hard on a toddler; four is harder. Sometimes less is kinder.
- **You have been to Ooty before** and want the gardens and the weather rather than the full circuit.
- **It is peak season and rooms are tight.** In April and May a second night in a good hotel can cost more than it is worth.
## When to take three days
- **It is your first time in the Nilgiris.** Seeing Ooty without Coonoor is like seeing a city and skipping the old quarter.
- **You want the toy train.** It needs the time and it is worth it.
- **You are on honeymoon or travelling as a couple.** The two-day is a schedule. The three-day is a holiday.
- **You are coming in the monsoon.** July to September the hills are green and quiet and the tea gardens look their best, but viewpoints cloud over without warning. A third day is your insurance against losing Doddabetta to fog.
## What the prices include, and what they do not
Both packages cover the same things: a private air-conditioned vehicle with a driver from your door in Bangalore and back, driver bata, tolls, parking, permits, the hotel for the nights listed, and all taxes. Nothing is shared and nothing is pooled — the vehicle is yours for the trip.
They do not cover monument, garden and boating entry fees, meals not listed, safari rides, or anything personal. We quote those on top rather than folding them into the headline number, and you get the full figure in writing before you pay anything.
One thing worth being clear about, because it is the most common source of confusion when people compare quotes: **our prices are for two travellers.** A lot of Ooty listings advertise a per-head figure, which looks cheaper until you multiply it. If there are more than two of you, it costs more — more room nights, and sometimes a larger vehicle. Tell us the headcount and we will give you the exact number.
## When to go
October to June is comfortable. December to February is the coldest and the clearest. April and May are the busiest, because that is when the plains are unbearable and everyone has the same idea. July to September is monsoon — fewer people, greener hills, lower rates, and a real chance of losing a viewpoint to cloud.
If you want the tea gardens at their best and you do not mind rain, the monsoon is underrated. If you want guaranteed views, come in winter.
## So which one
If you are asking the question at all, take the three days. The people who regret their Ooty trip are almost never the ones who stayed an extra night — they are the ones who drove seven hours each way to spend a single afternoon there.
If the weekend is all you have, the two-day is a genuinely good trip and we run plenty of them. Just go in knowing you are seeing Ooty, not the Nilgiris.
