**Read that as the price for the whole trip, not per person.** A family of four pays the same as a couple. This is the single most common question we get on the phone, and it is why the number looks high at first glance and reasonable ten seconds later.

## Two days or three?
**Two days** covers the core Ooty circuit comfortably — Doddabetta Peak, the Tea Factory and Museum, the Government Botanical Garden, Rose Garden, Ooty Lake and Pykara. It is a Friday-night-to-Sunday-evening trip that costs you no leave.
**Three days** adds a full day in Coonoor: Dolphin's Nose, Lamb's Rock, Sim's Park and the tea slopes. It is also the version where the Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train becomes realistic, because you are not spending the same day driving back.
If you have never been, most people who take the two-day trip say afterwards they wished they had taken the three.
## About the toy train
Nobody can guarantee you toy train tickets, and you should be suspicious of any operator who says they can. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a state railway service with limited seats that sell out weeks ahead. We plan the Coonoor day around a train slot and help you book, but the ticket is separate and subject to availability.
## The drive
Bangalore to Ooty is about 270 km and takes six to seven hours, through Bandipur and Mudumalai. That stretch closes to traffic between 9 pm and 6 am, so departures are planned early by design — and it is the best chance on the trip to see elephants and gaur from the car.
The road up from Gudalur has 36 hairpin bends. If anyone in your group gets carsick, this is the day to skip a heavy breakfast.
## When to go
October to June. The Nilgiris are pleasant nearly all year, but the monsoon between July and September makes the viewpoints a wall of white and the hairpins genuinely unpleasant. April and May are peak season — book two to three weeks ahead or the good hotels are gone.
